Since April 2015 a lecture series named Farewell to Revolution? – New Research Agendas in the Modern History of China has been taking place at the Chinese Studies Institute of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg. This series is organized in cooperation by Prof. Marc A. Matten of the Chinese Studies Institute and the Confucius Institute Nuremberg-Erlangen.
In 1995 Li Zehou and Liu Zaifu published a work which bid the revolution farewell in order to establish values such as economic development, individual freedom, social justice and political democracy. This farewell to maoist philosophy of history not only influenced China, but also sinological research: The master narrative is not formed by ideology anymore, but by the notion of culture.
This lecture series assembles a number of renowned researchers who will hold lectures about the big change happening in the research on Chinese contemporary history, furthermore they will give introductions to new topics, resources and methods.
